The real problem of your LaTeX source is that it uses dvips specific specials! There are no PSTricks involved! So you mustn't use ps4pdf. The right work flow would be: latex dvips -Ppdf <some PS to PDF convertor> (could be ps2pdf from Ghostscript or pstopdf from Apple) To view the output it would be OK to just run latex and either view the DVI file in xdvi or use TeXShop (TeXniscope can't be used, because dvipdfmx does support the dvips specials). OTOH: you're using quite old software to draw simple linguistic trees. Wouldn't you like to update? In the replies from the Mac OS X TeX list you can find in the footers a link to a TeX FAQ. It's worth trying it. Could be you'll find something that does not rely on old software ...
